Meet Helene Kiser, also known as the Writing Sherpa. As a writer, editor, and coach, Helene helps both individual writers and mission-driven entrepreneurs and nonprofits craft impactful messages. Her journey to success is a testament to resilience, dedication, and embracing introversion as a strength.
From Aspiring Writer to Industry Expert
Helene knew she wanted to be a writer from the age of seven. But, as she quickly learned, โmaking a living as a writerโ isnโt easy in the beginning. โI had confidence in my talent, expertise, and knowledge. What I did NOT have was samples, other than academic ones,โ she shared.
Instead of waiting for an opportunity to land in her lap, Helene took matters into her own hands. She offered free writing services to companies, nonprofits, and individuals she knew, building her portfolio and gaining referrals. โI gave these projects my all,โ she said.
While waiting tables for a year to make ends meet, she built a sustainable, profitable business that now allows her to be selective about the clients and projects she takes on.
Harnessing the Power of Introversion
As a self-proclaimed lifelong introvert, Helene has found that her natural tendencies play a big role in her work. โI communicate far better in writing than I do in person, something I work hard at to compensate for my all-too-often awkwardness,โ she admitted. Sheโs also an expert observer, able to take in both the big picture and the tiniest detailsโan invaluable skill in her field.
However, marketing as an introvert has been a challenge. โMy best friends are also introverts, and we often commiserate about how exhausting it is when we โhave to extrovert,โโ she laughed. But embracing her strengths has allowed her to create a thriving career without having to pretend to be something sheโs not.
Embracing Your Strengths
One of the biggest lessons Helene has learned is the importance of self-acceptance. โI wish Iโd been truly comfortable and at home in my own skin much earlier in life,โ she shared. โEmbrace your unique set of expert skills and weaknesses. Even deficiencies can be a strength, depending on how you deal with or accept them.โ
A Life Well-Lived
For Helene, the dream life is already happening. โI travel frequently, have incredible children, and long-term friendships that sustain me in good and bad times,โ she said.
While she wouldnโt mind a bit more reading time (who wouldnโt?), she feels lucky to have built a life where she controls her time, her projects, and the people she surrounds herself with.
What It Means to Be an Introverted DreamHer
Being an Introverted DreamHer means using quiet strengthsโlike observation, focus, and deep thinkingโto build a fulfilling and successful life. Heleneโs journey is proof that introverts donโt need to be the loudest in the room to make an impact.
