Amy Perez: Listening Her Way to the Top of the Marketing World

Amy Perez has built her career one thoughtful step at a time, by listening, observing, and trusting her own pace in an industry that often moves too fast and too loud.

Born and raised in Ecuador and now based in New York, Amy is the co-founder of Fluentica, a growing marketing agency helping B2B startups cut through the noise with clarity and purpose. With a background in nonprofits and small businesses, Amy knows firsthand how to stretch a marketing budget without sacrificing strategy. โ€œIโ€™ve always been part of founding marketing teams, usually the only person doing it all,โ€ she shares. That experience taught her how to be resourceful, adaptable, and intentional.

Turning a Layoff into an Opportunity

Fluentica was born from both ambition and a moment of unexpected opportunity. โ€œI was laid off during the wave of tech layoffs after grad school,โ€ Amy says. โ€œInstead of panicking, I took it as a sign. Maybe now was the time to start something of my own.โ€ Two years and a few pivots later, Fluentica is still standing and growing.

Thriving as an Introverted Agency Owner

But navigating the marketing world as an introvert hasnโ€™t always been easy. โ€œImagine being a woman, a Latina, and an introvert,โ€ Amy says. โ€œAnd now, Iโ€™m also a business owner. That adds a lot of weight to my introvert shoulders.โ€

Amy used to believe that marketing professionals had to be bubbly, talkative, and always ready to pitch. โ€œThat just isnโ€™t me,โ€ she admits. โ€œI need time to prepare before meetings or events. I canโ€™t just jump into a conversation. I have to warm up to it.โ€

Marketers are usually the ones talking. But I realized maybe this industry needs more listeners.

Over time, she realized that her way of showing up didnโ€™t have to look like everyone elseโ€™s. In fact, itโ€™s her listening skills, her ability to really hear clients and understand what they need, that have become her superpower. โ€œMarketers are usually the ones talking. But I realized maybe this industry needs more listeners,โ€ she says. That insight became the focus of her grad school thesis and the heart of how she leads today.

A Message for Fellow Introverts

Her advice for fellow introverts is to โ€œrecognize your superpowers and your limits. Donโ€™t try to be someone else. Thereโ€™s real strength in how you operate.โ€ She even turned that insight into the theme of her graduate thesis, reminding herself and others that sometimes, the most powerful voice in the room is the one thatโ€™s listening.

Dreaming of a Simple, Meaningful Life

As for her dream life, Amy says, “It changes every year!โ€ But at the moment, sheโ€™s picturing one of two scenarios: traveling the world in a van with her partner and pets or settling into a quiet farm-like home in upstate New York or back in Ecuador while continuing to build Fluentica with heart.

Whatever the setting, one thingโ€™s for sure. Amyโ€™s version of success isnโ€™t about volume. Itโ€™s about intention, presence, and doing meaningful work on her own terms.
