For Marcia Layton Turner, ghostwriting is the perfect blend of curiosity, creativity, and independence. As a bestselling business book ghostwriter, she helps CEOs, entrepreneurs, and experts bring their stories and ideas to life. โOr, as I tell people,โ she says with a smile, โI get paid to learn.โ
Most days, youโll find her in her spacious, quiet home office, deep in thought, mapping out a clientโs message or unraveling a complex concept through conversation and storytelling. Her process is rooted in asking smart, thoughtful questions; the kind that draw out the details others might miss. Itโs a mix of cerebral work and deep listening, and she wouldnโt have it any other way.
Though Marcia earned her MBA with dreams of becoming an independent consultant, it took some exploration to figure out the right path.
Iโve always valued the ability to control my schedule and choose my projects.
She started in corporate communications at Kodak but soon realized the higher she climbed, the further she got from the work she actually enjoyed. That realization sparked a journey of pivots: from marketing to PR to finally building her ghostwriting boutique. โIโve always valued the ability to control my schedule and choose my projects,โ she says. โThis career gives me that freedom and keeps me close to the work I love.โ
Thriving as an Introverted Entrepreneur
Marciaโs success didnโt happen in spite of her introversion. It happened because she built a business that supports it. โI know that working in silence, alone, is the best possible environment for me,โ she shares. So, she created a home office that allows her to do just that.
Sheโs also become selective about her clients, understanding how draining it can be to work with someone who doesnโt align with her style. โOther people have a significant impact on my energy and focus,โ she says. โNow, I only take on projects with people who are a good fit.โ
One of her favorite productivity insights is working with her natural rhythm. โIโve learned Iโm most productive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and again after dinner,โ she explains. So, she structures her day accordingly, saving high-focus tasks for those times and filling the rest of the day with lighter admin work and meetings.
A Dream with a View
Marcia is currently living her dream life doing meaningful, creative work, on her own terms. Thereโs just one detail sheโd tweak. โIโd like to relocate to the backwoods of Maine,โ she says. โThat would make me even happier and more productive.โ
With quiet surroundings, focused work time, and a steady stream of stories to bring to life, Marcia Layton Turner has created a career and lifestyle that reflect who she is and thatโs the real dream.
