Erin Bank, Shaping Science Through Writing and Strategy

When science meets storytelling, magic happens—and Erin Bank knows this well. As Director of Research Strategy at the UC San Francisco Cancer Center, Erin combines her PhD-level scientific expertise with her love of writing. Balancing her salary position with freelance consulting for grant writing and research strategy, she’s crafted a career that blends intellect, creativity, and flexibility.

From Lab to Leading Strategist

Erin’s career path started in an unexpected place: during her postdoc in Israel. “Every written document, from emails to grant proposals, came through me as the native English speaker,” she shared. This sparked a realization: scientists who can write well are rare, making her skills uniquely valuable. Over time, she carved out a niche helping research teams craft winning grant proposals and develop strategic plans.

Thriving as an Introvert in Academia

Academia can be a whirlwind of meetings, deadlines, and collaborative projects—a challenge for introverts. Erin learned early on that managing a team, though rewarding, drained her energy. “I absolutely need big chunks of time for undistracted deep work, and those are the activities that bring me the most fulfillment,” she said. Balancing collaborative work with quiet, focused time has been key to her professional success.

I’ve learned that if I get an email from faculty at an odd hour, or a last-minute request, I don’t have to make their emergency my emergency.

Wisdom from the Journey

Setting boundaries has been one of Erin’s most powerful lessons. “I’ve learned that if I get an email from faculty at an odd hour, or a last-minute request, I don’t have to make their emergency my emergency,” she explained. Her pragmatic approach helps her stay energized while navigating academia’s often unpredictable demands.

Living the Dream Life

“I wouldn’t change a thing,” Erin said about her current life. With a flexible schedule, the ability to work from home, and the freedom to choose projects she’s passionate about, she’s living a life designed around her strengths. “I can say yes and no to projects and not feel forced to do something I don’t really want to be doing.”
